  1. Greek Classical sculptor. He supervised the
  2. sculptural programme for the Parthenon (most
  3. of it preserved in the British Museum,
  4. London, and known as the Elgin marbles). He
  5. also executed the colossal statue of Zeus at
  6. Olympia, one of the Seven Wonders of the
  7. World. He was a friend of the political
  8. leader Pericles, who made him superintendent
  9. of public works in Athens.
